Magna Township Survey Town Hall Meeting

A Town Hall meeting to educate Magna residents on the upcoming HB-40 survey is scheduled for later this month at the Magna Rec Center. HB-40 is a law affecting how Magna can be organized, the law requires a survey be sent to all property owners in Magna to see how they would like the government of Magna to be organized. All residents of Magna are strongly encouraged to attend the meeting to be fully informed. Here are the details:

Monrovia to stage benefit concert in Magna

Magna Band Battles Cancer with Music

The Utah band Monrovia, led by Magna's Scott Hongell, and Wes Furgason, with Park City native Jeff Lawrence, is a band on a mission. Together they are working to raise awareness and fight cancer. Each of the band members has been personally affected by cancer, and they hope their music can make a difference for others. The truly enjoy playing the music but also strive to support a good cause along the way. That is why they have decided to hold a benefit concert at the Filling Station this weekend. Concert attendees will be eligible for many prizes like a custom bike restoration from Big Salty Customs. Raffle tickets will be available from the band in advance for $1. The band raised $1,000 for the American Cancer Society, last year and hopes to raise $1,500 this year. If you can't make it to the show you can still make a donation. UTA changes mind on 335, BRT delayed

Unofficial word from UTA is that the 335 "Magna Fast Bus" will not be canceled and the BRT line will be delayed until August. UTA may be considering keeping a regular bus running at all 100+ current stops of the 35 route, at the same time as BRT. Many riders had complained the BRT system would eliminate too many bus stops.

Argument leads to gunfire

Three men got into an argument after playing games in a Magna apartment. The man living in the apartment asked his friends to leave, and after they refused he brandished a pistol, which the visitors then took from the man, assaulted him and fired four shots into the air. The shots were heard around the neighborhood off Magna Main Street. The victim was taken to the hospital, and has since been released. An investigation is underway to determine the identity of the suspects.


A shooting occured Monday night just before 10 PM at this Apartment building off of 9000 West in Magna.

UTA Open House on BRT and Route 335

UTA held an open house Thursday night to explain the new Bus Rapid Transit System and proposed cancellation of route 335. Many residents of Magna attended and voiced their opion about the plan. Next weeks print edition will have a full story on the meeting. Here are some pictures from the meeting.

Happy Birthday Representative Duckworth!


The Utah House of Representatives wished Representative Duckworth a Happy Birthday today by singing to him during House floor time.

Duckworth is battling a rare form of cancer, and we wish him the best.

UTA canceling Express Bus service to Magna



UTA is unveiling Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) for the first time in Utah. The new BRT route would replace route 35 which runs along 3500 South. Route 35 currently takes 46 minutes to get from Magna to the light rail station on 3300 South. A trip on TRAX to the City Center station adds another 15 minutes to the trip. The Express route number 335 takes 36 minutes to complete the same trip.

I. UTA proposes to begin a new bus rapid transit (BRT) route on 3500 South. The BRT would replace the existing Route 35 on 3500 South and would include limited stops. The BRT would run every 15 minutes.

With the BRT route on 3500 South, UTA proposes to cancel Route 335.

UTA also proposes to change the route alignment of Route 62 to service Winchester Street and the 6400 South TRAX Station instead of 5400 South and 5300 South and the 5300 South TRAX Station.


II. The public open house will be held on Thursday, February 7 2008, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the UTA Administration building boardroom, located at 3600 South 700 West, Salt Lake City, UT.

The format for the public open house will proceed as follows:
1. Open house to allow people to visit with UTA staff to review the proposal and have questions answered (30 minutes).
2. Formal presentation of the proposal (30 minutes).
3. Opportunity for the public to give input through an open microphone, written or recorded comments (30 minutes).


III. At the hearing, the Utah Transit Authority will afford an opportunity for affected citizens, private transportation providers, public officials and interested agencies to comment on the proposed changes. To be included as part of the public hearing record, all comments must be postmarked no later than five days following the public hearing or February 14, 2008.


IV. To assure full participation at the hearing, accommodations for effective communication, such as sign language interpreters or printed materials in alternative formats, must be requested at least five (5) working days prior to the date of the scheduled event. All comments will become part of the public hearing record if received by February 14, 2008.


VI. Relevant information about the proposed changes will be available at the public hearing or may be reviewed at the UTA Corporate offices, located at 3600 South 700 West, Salt Lake City, Utah after February 7, 2008. Comments must be postmarked or received by UTA no later than February 14, 2008 to be part of the public hearing record.
